Slipping occurs when the disc fails to rotate at the same speed as the clamping components when the clutch is engaged or is when the pressure plate fails to hold the disc tight against the face of the flywheel.

Potential causes of slip:

  1. Improper break-in procedure
  2. The vehicle is overpowering the clutch
  3. Driver resting a foot on the clutch pedal causing the bearing to apply pressure to the diaphragm of the pressure plate thus slightly releasing the assembly
  4. Faulty hydraulics hindering the pressure plate from fully engaging

Slipping related to clutch adjustment:

  1. An improper clutch adjustment can cause slippage by allowing the release bearing to have preload to the diaphragm thus causing the pressure plate to stay in a slightly released position.
  2. A binding linkage that would prevent the pressure plate from exerting full pressure against the disc/proper engagement

Other potential causes of slip:

  1. A seized hydraulic system
    • This can be caused by broken motor mounts producing excessive engine movement
  2. A leaking master/slave cylinder
  3. Grease and/or oil on the disc
  4. Damaged or bent clutch disc
  5. Clutch disc has broken or missing friction material
  6. The friction material of the clutch disc is glazed from overheating
  7. Flywheel improperly resurfaced or incorrect step
  8. Improper or damaged release bearing
